Grand Island Dance Center was established in 2004 and is located in Western New York in the community of Grand Island. Rachel Novelli is the Director and Kathy Abbondanza is the Co-Director.

lewiston danceMiss Rachel has studied dance for over 30 years and represents the third generation of a family of profesionl dancers, dance company choreographers and dance instructors. She began dancing at age 3 under the tutelage of her Mom, Miss Kathy and studied under many professional dancers and dance instructors. She was also a member and choreographer with Tanzen, Niagara County Community College's dance company. She always enjoyed working with children and it was her dream to open her own dance studio. Miss Rachel and her 2 dance studios, Lewiston Dance Center and Grand Island Dance Center, are well known in the area, not only for the high quality of dance instruction, but more importantly, for the personal interest and support provided to their young students of dance. "It's so rewarding watching young people grow in skill and confidence and enjoy the pleasure of self expression."

Miss Kathy, Miss Rachel's Mom and mentor, studied ballet and modern dance at Julliarad in New York City and was the assistant manager for the largest dance school in the City. While living in NYC, Miss Kathy studied with Jose Limon, Arthur Mitchell, Alvin Ailey, Donald McQuayle, the June Taylor Dancers and many others. She returned to her hometown in 1967 and opened Miss Kathy's School of Dance in Niagara Falls, NY. "Dance and dance instruction has been a famiy tradition and we're now teaching the children of students that I taught when I first began."


Our Teachers


Miss Laura began dance at the age of 5, Miss Laura studied tap, jazz, ballet, modern, pointe and hip hop and she's won many dance competitions. Laura was a member of Tanzen, the Niagara County Community College dance company, where she choreographed, danced and sang. She studied modern dance at the University of Buffalo and has been teaching with us since 1998. She is very excited to pass on what she has learned to all of our students.
Miss Patti began dancing at Lewiston Dance in 1998. She studied jazz, tap, ballet and pointe class. Patti received the Abbondanza Scholarship award from Lewiston Dance in 2001. She attended Niagara County Community College in 2002 and joined the Tanzen Dance Company. While in the Tanzen, Patti experienced many different styles of dance, including modern dance and performed and choreographed for the company for two years. We were very proud when was accepted into the Department of Dance at SUNY College at Brockport and pursued a Master of Arts degree in Dance from the State University of Brockport and graduated in 2006. Patti then wanted to pursue her other love, visual arts. In 2009, she became certified to teach Art K-12 from Buffalo State College. Patti has performed with Lewiston Dance, Grand Island Dance, and in many community events. She danced at Niagara Universityís Basketball half-time show, and the Firemenís Telethon in Niagara Falls. While studying dance in Brockport she also performed in such shows as STRASSER and Dance HARTWELL, as well as the faculty show DANSCORE. Her talent and enthusiasm brings great dimension to her teaching abilities at both Lewiston Dance and Grand Island Dance.
- Miss Kayla has been dancing with us since she was 4. She has studied tap, jazz, ballet and hip hop and was also one of our scholarship winners. She began demonstrating at Lewiston Dance when she was 11 years old and has been a teacher at Grand Island Dance since it opened in 2004, teaching tap, ballet and hip hop. Kayla danced with NCCCís dance troupe, Tanzen and has also performed at Niagara University at half-time for their basketball games, the NF Firemanís Telethon and also at Fantasy Islandís Dance Spectacular. She has choreographed cheer dance routines for competitions, hip hop dances, and many dance solos, and duets at both studios. Kayla has also taught hip hop classes at Lewiston Porter High School for adults and teens for their Community Education Department. Besides teaching, Kayla is currently a full time student at Daemen College.
